UNODC Programs to strengthen Families
Mr. Wadih MAALOUF
A publication has been launched only last week: The INSPIRE Handbook: action for implementing the seven strategies for ending violence against children
Violence is among the leading causes of death worldwide for people aged 15– 44 (World Health Organization: WHO Collaborating Centre for
Violence Prevention, 2010), representing a widespread public health problem. Systems and programmes which help to prevent violence and reduce its impact are therefore urgently required.
There are a wide range of interventions which work to both reduce and prevent violence. One type of violence prevention strategy with scientific evidence is to develop safe, stable relationships between children and their parents and caregivers (World Health Organization: WHO Collaborating Centre for Violence Prevention, 2010). A supportive family environment is essential for the healthy development of children ( Krug, Dahlberg, Mercy, Zwi, & Lozano, 2002), making them more resilient to life’s challenges (Rutter, 1999; Stephenson & Helme, 2006)
